Summer Isn't Cancelled with New Release: 'Tanlines'!

Summer Isn’t Cancelled

Many of us are still spending most of our time inside with shutdowns and Covid-19. Summer basically feels cancelled at this point… until the recent release of your next summer jam: ‘Tanlines’ by your favorite artist Catherine Forte. ;)

In all honesty, I really hope this song brings you all the summer vibes to beat the covid blues.

The Meaning Behind the Song

The inspiration for Tanlines began almost a year ago after taking a trip to Okinawa, Japan. I laid out on the sandy beaches all day, soaking in the sun and literally got the worst sunburn of my life. (Don’t forget sunscreen, guys!) After my back healed, I had criss-cross tan lines from my bathing suit for literally months. Every time I saw them in the mirror it reminded me of that amazing weekend trip with my fiancé, the beautiful beaches, and the fact that I will never underestimate the power of the sun. It got me thinking how these tan lines illicit such memories - good and bad - and how they can be just as stark and eventually fade. I got my pen and paper and scribbled the first line: “I still have the tan lines on my back, from when burnt up in Malibu.” I know I said I was in Okinawa, but I’m a California girl at heart and, quite frankly, it matched my rhyming scheme to set up the chorus: “I’m still not over you.”

Recording in Tokyo and San Diego

I had a mini home studio set up in Tokyo with the goal of learning how to record and produce quality demos. With what started out as just a day of “learning how to make cool sounds on Logic Pro X” ended with “oh my goodness I think this is the poppiest thing I’ve ever written.” I started out with a Rhodes Piano with the basic chord progression and layered some punchy clavinet (not joking) and 808s. Inspired by the track, I tried out the lyrics I had previously written and ended up writing the entirety of Tanlines in that sitting. The demo was born. On Christmas vacation to San Diego I met up with my friend and producer, Drew Chammas (aka Druloop), to finish tracking vocals to my first single ‘First Dance’ and begin recording the second single. We initially were going to record another song (you can hear a live version here) but after he heard the first few seconds on Tanlines, he paused it and we both knew this song needed to be recorded then and there. Drew brought my demo to LIFE and truly transformed it into a track I am so proud of while keeping the core intact.
